Should I become a mechanic, mechanical engineer, or automotive engineer if I want to work with cars?

A Decision to Make

Many times I am asked for advice on whether an individual should go to a technical school to become a mechanic, or go to a university to become an engineer. What we all have in common is that we love cars. Where we differ is how we like to work with them. The purpose of this article is to give my opinion of what you should do, giving you an idea of which field you should go into, and why.
Personally, I chose to be a mechanical engineer because I thought it would be my ticket into the automotive world. I was always excellent with mathematics (and poor in English). I knew early on that I would one day go to college for something relating to math and science. Eventually I turned to mechanical engineering. Automotive engineering was not offered at my school, and I felt mechanical engineering would be more well rounded anyways.

Becoming a Mechanic

So first, let's take the mechanic's side. Should I become a mechanic, knowing that I want to work with cars? Here are a few questions to ask yourself. Are you a hands on person? Do you work on your own car, and are you passionate about working on your own car? Do you want to guarantee that you will be touching (yes, physically touching) cars at your job? If you have answered yes to these, then becoming a mechanic could be the right choice. It does not mean, however, that you should not become an engineer. That said, if you know for a fact that you want to work in a shop, on cars, and repair/modify/tune cars, then becoming a mechanic is pretty much the option you need to take. As an engineer, it will be much more difficult to get hands on work in the automotive industry.

Advice for Aspiring Mechanics
  • First, get some formal education in car mechanics, such as at a technical college, to help secure a job.
  • Working at dealerships can pay better than many chain shops.
  • I think the ultimate goal for anyone who wants to become a mechanic would be to open a private shop on their own. This isn't something that can be done right off the bat, it will take many, many years (and you'll have to save money).
  • It's not easy to fully comprehend all of the systems in a vehicle, and since technology is always evolving you have to constantly adapt and learn. I only trust my car with local shops, people who have reputations that I know I can go to and not get screwed over - others have this mentality as well.
  • By building a customer base, and offering honest service, you should be able to make a great living.
Smart Choice: Mechanical Engineer over Automotive Engineer

Maybe I should study automotive or mechanical engineering? Now this may sound pessimistic in a way, but I'm just being frank and sharing my honest opinion. Instead of majoring in automotive engineering, become a mechanical engineer. If you are already in the process of becoming an automotive engineer, I'm not saying you've made the wrong choice, but mechanical engineers will likely have an easier time finding a job. The reason being that mechanical engineers are considered more well rounded. They may not know as much about the automotive world, but they understand the complications of engineering, and can apply it to anything.
I have spoken with an aerospace corporation at the career fair at my university on multiple occasions. Our university has majors for mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering. Yet this company has told me personally that they tend to hire more mechanical engineers than aerospace engineers. The reasoning? This may sting a little for aerospace engineers, so that's my warning. The reason is that if you graduate with a BS degree in aerospace, you probably aren't going to be designing a wing for a plane anytime soon, unless you keep going on to graduate school. But someone hired, who's studied mechanical engineering, could be used for something a little more basic, such as seating arrangements, overhead compartment latches, and so on. Having more general knowledge of structures, strength of materials, and dynamics is more important to companies than if you have a specific four year engineering degree. That's the beauty of mechanical engineering. The number of companies you can have a career with as a mechanical engineer is far greater than the number of companies you can get a job with an automotive engineering degree, even if the automotive engineer is more intelligent!

Is Engineering Right for Me?

Alright, so now that my opinion of which to choose (auto vs mech) is clear, the question still remains unanswered. Am I the type of person that should be a mechanical engineer? This is the route one should choose if they desire to get into the design of cars. The questions you need to ask yourself are: Are you the type of person that tries to understand how everything works? Are you mathematically adept? No, seriously, are you good at math? This question cannot be strained enough. By choosing to become a mechanical engineer, you are choosing to attempt to understand various extremely complicated mathematical issues that take patience to comprehend. Are you a problem solver? After being shown how to do something one time, can you repeat the process many more times, with variations each time? These are the questions, that if you answer yes to, you should consider looking into engineering.
You may be thinking, many of these questions don't sound fun to say yes to. Well, you'd be correct. I'm not going to say everything about mechanical engineering is awesome, I don't think it is. I thoroughly enjoyed my thermodynamics classes, my automotive engineering class, and my internal combustion class. But at the same time there are many classes I'd rather never think about again. It's challenging, and you have to be willing to be challenged constantly, to struggle weekly, and of course be ready for plenty of homework. It's not easy, but it is very rewarding. There is a lot of respect that engineers have, and it's for being able to comprehend physical ideas that not everyone can wrap their heads around.

What Should I Expect as an Engineer?

So what should one expect, if they now know they would like to be a mechanical engineer? Here's how I like to look at it. Feel free to Google any of these courses, and begin to look at what you will be learning about. It all starts with statics. I thought nothing could be more difficult than statics when I took this course. Nothing I had previously done in life challenged me so much. I thought, engineering must only get easier after this; how wrong I was. Indeed, statics was by far one of the easiest courses of my mechanical engineering curriculum.
Dynamics was next, one of two classes I could only pull off a C in  while in college. Dynamics was the most difficult class at that point in college, but still didn't compare to others. Solid mechanics was interesting to me, and so I found it easier to do well in. That said, you can expect quadruple integrals and finding multiple constants in the latter sections of this subject. Thermodynamics, which the majority of people will surely struggle with, is simply one of the most fascinating sciences ever if you are into internal combustion and cars. That said, it was extremely challenging. Heat transfer, probably the second most difficult course I took (managed a 55 on my first test) was painful, and due to my student teacher, quite boring.
The mother of all classes (and my second C), the most difficult of them all, came junior year, in the form of vibrations. Attach a string to two stationary walls, then flick the string somewhere along it. Now, come up with a formula for the vertical location of the string, at any point along the string, at any time after the string has been flicked. Yes, it can be done. No, I cannot explain to you how. I was fortunate to have a phenomenal instructor for controls, and although I was told it would be the most difficult course as a mechanical engineer, it dwarfed in difficulty to vibrations, heat transfer, and even dynamics for myself. What I'm telling you is, you're going to struggle, you're going to be challenged, but with dedication you will be able to get through it, and the knowledge you will gain will be quite impressive.

Advice for Aspiring Engineers?
  • Befriend engineers. You will realize pretty soon that as an engineer, you're going to have a lot less free time than your peers if they are not in an engineering major, or aren't involved in clubs/sports. Having engineering friends will keep you on an even workload as your peers, and it will be much easier to put forth the extra effort required. I can't tell you how many countless hours I spent with my two ME buddies, Tom Tom and Kendrick.
  • Get involved with the automotive clubs at your school; this can mean Formula SAE, or even an EcoCar challenge. Getting involved with something like this will look great when applying to automotive companies. In fact, some automotive companies will only look at individuals who have been involved in such clubs. Also, being in these clubs will lead to networking opportunities, making it much easier to find a job out of college. This is probably the most important advice I have, GET INVOLVED IN AUTOMOTIVE CLUBS!!
  • If you know for a fact that you want to work with design in the automotive industry, my advice is go to graduate school, and form a thesis on an automotive idea. This will show companies what you are capable of, and will be your ticket into the design world. Note: This is extremely difficult to do, and you need to be sure when you choose a thesis, it is something you are legitimately passionate about, because you will own that project for multiple years, and will be totally responsible for it.
  • Oh, and if you're fresh out of high school, and are still using a TI-83 (I sadly still do as well), you will find it very rewarding to switch over to a TI-89. Take the time to learn how to use the 89, it will be worth it. That said, scientific calculators will not be allowed on many of your exams. Use it as a tool for completing homework in a more efficient manner.

I hope this has helped answer your questions, and has given you a better idea of where to lead your future. I wish you all the best of luck in everything you do!

  1. This is a great post! I am most likely going into Mechanical Engineering next fall (I'm currently a sophomore in college, but only taking core curriculum classes thus far). Could you do a post with some information on different universities around the country that offers a ME degree? At the moment I am looking at either North Carolina State University or Southern Illinois University.

    9. I was having serious relationship problems with my boyfriend and it had resulted in him moving out to his friend’s apartment. Everything got worse because he started going to bars and strip clubs frequently with his friend, getting drunk and passing out. He always threatens me on phone whenever I call him because of all the bad advises that his friend has given him. I really love him and we had been dating for 6 years which gave us a beautiful daughter. I had also lost a lot of money on therapists until I was introduced to Dr JATTO by a friend whom he helped to marry her childhood boyfriend; this gave me total confidence and strength to get him back. I did all he asked and after 24 hours my boyfriend called me and rushed back home, things just changed between us emotionally. He has a job and stopped drinking and keeping irrelevant friends. It’s a miracle I never believed it was possible because I had lost all hope until I found Dr JATTO. So that’s why I promised to share my testimony all over the universe. All thanks goes to Dr JATTO for the excessive work that he has done for me Contact him his Email: drjattolovespellteple@gmail.com or drjattolovespelltemple@yahoo.co.uk or call him on his mobile:+2347050270268 or contact him though his website: http://drjattolovespellte.wixsite.com/spelltemp...

  2. I love cars and would love to be a mechanic, but the pay is too low. So I'm looking at being a mechanical engineer. However, I'm okay on math and that's it. I'm not anywhere near the top of my class. I love math, but I'm just not good at it. Are there any alternatives? I'm excellent in the sciences though. I want to know what other jobs I can work around cars with, but not requiring math that is too vigorous. Hope I'll figure out soon. Thanks!

    4. You can get paid pretty well as a technician, it just depends on how hard and efficient you work. Even as a tech you need some math skills and relevant calculations to certain items on a car. Bottom line is, if you want to reach your goals you have to defy your limitations or just deal with shitty pay until you get where you want, however long that may take.

It's a great field, it's just not something I have much experience with. But if wires are circuits actually make sense to you (I'm dumbfounded) then power to you, and pursue by all means!

Could I major in business and minor in mechanical so I will know how to run my company.

    1. If you actually want to design this transmission it would seem mechanical would be a better bet to get a good understanding of how to make it. Then you can always get an MBA to implement your idea. I'd say you have to make it, test it, and prove it first though. And have patents along the way. Or do it as a thesis to aid in funding, but consequently you would lose the rights to the project. Best of luck!

  6. Oh I see, you intended to do Automotive Engineering but you did Mechanical Engineering since your school doesn't do it. As for me, mine is opposite, I wanted to do Mechanical Engineering after you helped me on my decision a couple of months ago. But unfortunately, yes there was MechEng available to study around my area (Liverpool, Manchester, Preston and etc) but since I am a slow learner that needs time to get info in a long period of time (because my English is awful but have pretty much the Scientific and Mathematical talent). I wanted to do Foundation Degree in MechEng. I found one, but I cannot risk for for that only course in case I don't get accepted. So since I found about 3 Foundation Automotive Engineering around my area, I chose that. And fortunately, I already got an offer in Blackpool just before Christmas, but I want to go Manchester as it's closer. And I almost forgot, my question is, did you get to get your hands on the cars in the workshop very often while you was doing your degree? Because I am a theorist, but also want to get my hands on cars very often too as I learn. Is that possible in Degree based courses J?

  8. well I just found this post at the perfect time, I am making a decision (maybe the hardest one in my life) whether to choose mechanical engineering or automotive engineering for the rest of my life and i really really need opinions. The thing is, i am currently studying ME and i am about to finish the second year (finished statics, thermodynamics I. currently taking fluids, material science and dynamics) and i was very happy with my decision studying ME until yesterday! yesterday an automotive engineering program courses plan came across me and while i was reading it i just figured that as ME i will not learn 1/3 of the things they learn, so now i am seriously considering changing my major, my university and the country i am living in. I already left my hometown 3 years ago so i can study ME (they dont offer ME in my country) and i need to change where i am living now again, because in all the middle east there is not a single university that offer Automotive engineering, and this is not the only problem (actually it is not a problem for me) the real problem is that i am afraid if i change to AutomotiveE i am gonna have to start over right from the beginning (this is already my 5th semester and i only finished 53 credits out of 144 "i am already behind") because when i read the courses plan i couldn't find a single mutual course. so i am so confused, i really dont know what to do, i am planning to ask all my department instructors for their opinions but i am trying ti get as many honest opinion as i can and you really look like you have a very good knowledge in these stuff so i really need your advice. sorry for the long comment but you know how things are when you have to make a life changing decisions, please take your time to reply and please put a lot of thoughts into it, or if you prefer more interactive way ill be thankful :)
One more thing, i am sure whatever the university ill go to (if ill change my major) it will be much better than the one i am currently studying in.

    1. For the reasons I have described in detail above, I recommend that you go with ME. That's my personal opinion, and once again, I've laid out the reasons why I think this way above.

      Best of luck to you!

    2. Hello, I really will be extremely glad if you can reply to me. I find myself interested in both the UG programs my university offers I.e. EEE- Electrical & Electronics and ME. Which one should I take? I read your comment above regarding hybrid cars and others coming in a lot so does that mean EEE will be better to get into Automobile/aviation industries? (I love both cars and air crafts)

I personally find myself more passionate in the mechanical aspects but electricity doesn't fail to interest me either. Please advise. I'm going to begin my freshmen year in M.E. and changing later can be difficult. The main reason I'm in a dilemma is because soon I hear learning about ICE is going to be obsolete! :(
      anticipating a reply asap.

@Faresalkerdi I'm also in Dubai, please can u contact me and share your experience.

Also I randomly searched for mechanical engineering on YouTube and chanced on a video of a m.e who works in Tesla... so is the job prospects for m.e. going to be reduced in the future? Surely for instance Tesla will be hiring more EEEng. Than m.e...and all other car companies as everybody is going eco nowadays.

I am currently attending CC for electrical engineering, but I have recently discovered that I want to work in the automotive design industry. In the long run, I want to design aftermarket suspension components for high performance racing applications on street cars. I've realized that I love cars too much to not include them in my everyday life.

So my question is with suspension design in mind, would you still recommend a ME major? I've always thought ME was more for drivetrain type engineering, but upon researching, I can't really find a major that is tailored specifically to my goals. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    1. With suspension design in mind, ME is still a good idea. I'd join an FSAE club and request to be a part of the suspension team. Also, you can start looking into dynamics and vibrations (two of my least favorite classes, as I've written above - somewhat interesting material, but I just struggled with it). These two courses are very related to suspension design. Controls as well.

      Best of luck to you!

So a little background I went to college and got a mechanical engineering tech 4yr degree, then got into manufacturing without ever doing a co-op/internship and really didn't like the work. I'm working a temp job at an auto manufacturer until I find what I want to do. Obviously it pays less than an engineering job to be a auto mechanic/tech, but do you think it would be a terrible career move if I really enjoy working on cars?

I am also quite good at maths, as long as I actually pay attention(I get bored in lectures and with units very easily) I can do any work, just finishing Diff Equations now. I am looking forward to doing thermo and mechanical design next semester. My question is, as i really love working on cars and motorbikes even more, I want to design and work in the automotive industry, should i continue doing ME or what? I find sometimes I get really bored with academic work but then on the other hand sometimes i get bored with handy work. Is there something you can suggest thats a bit of an imbetween? 21. Hello, I red all about your advice and your opinions about what career path should I choose. I am currently taking up architecture because I thought designing cars is the same as designing building or the the person who designs cars as well as buildings is an architect.. It's true for building though. and after I realize that the two were of different worlds. I think I would go to seek courses that are inclined in making and designing cars. I like cars, even though I don't know about the technical know-how about it, I really want to design build and innovate cars. and preferably make one of my own. (in the future) even though I am not good in math but I am willing to learn for the sake of my passion. so what course should I take? would a mechanic (automotive) design concepts, and make a innovative car? or should I prefer mechanical engineer?

    1. If you want to get into design, you should go the engineering route. Mechanics are typically not involved much in design (which is unfortunate, as many times they can be the "voice of reason" for designs since they have hands on experience with the product).

  27. It's funny, before i found your vids on youtube or read your "Future Plans" and "FAQs" page, i was dead set on become a structural engineer (always thought building a house and bridge would be awesome).
Over the last year and a half i've gotten really interested in cars and their mechanical aspect - I've always loved taking things apart and "building" stuff.
Now the more of your videos i watch, the more unsure i am and now i'm thinking about possibly going into Mechanical engineering.
Only thing keeping me back is the thought of once i graduate, rather than working in some car related field, i'll be designing some cooling line on a fridge.

Now i'm half a year away of having to decide into what i'll go and i'm unsure.
Would it be possible for you to give me an idea of what are some of the things you do?

Thanks for your time Jason :)

  34. Hello
I found your article by chance, but perhaps not by coincidence.
Growing up, i wanted to be an engineer. From playing with legos, rebuilding old dirt bikes to helping my step father with his business. He is an engineer, designing and building automation machines. Math and science have always been my strong suit. In high school, I took additional calculus and physics classes, along with electronics, drafting, CAD and pre-engineering electives.
After graduating, I "took time off" and kinda wasted a couple years just working "joe" jobs. Which pushed me to the decision to go back to school for a real career. Continuing down the engineering path seemed out of reach. At the time automotive mechanic sounded like a a good choice. I'm a good problem solver and enjoy wrenching.
I thought I could focus on electrical and driveabilty diagnosis, thinking it would lead me to better opportunities.
I graduated 6 years ago from a automotive technology program with an associates degree. One year later I attained ASE master tech and L1 while working for an import dealership.
I believe I made a mistake. I am not content being an automotive tech and I am seriously looking for a career change. For me, it has become an almost mindless, repetitive job with little reward. Also, being flat rate can be physically demanding work. Tonight, after the end of another frustrating work week, I'm searching the internet for ideas.
So, is 30 to late to begin an engineering education? Is there a serious demand for electrical engineers in the auto world? Are there any part time/online courses that would be worth looking into? Or would going straight to a 4 year program be a better of use of time/money?
Thank you for the insightful article. I appreciate any light you can shed for me.
    Matt

    1. Hello!

If you are bored with your current situation as things seem to be repetitive, engineering could be a great choice. It's definitely a rewarding career, and it's definitely something new on a relatively frequent basis. Having all of your experience in the automotive field, you would have a huge advantage over many engineers with little hands on knowledge. Getting an electrical degree could certainly help you find a job in the automotive world. I don't think it's too late by any means. I will note that it's a challenging career, but it sounds like you're pretty determined so I wouldn't advise you to not go for it. Sounds like you'd be a great engineer.

      Cheers,
      Jason

It wasn't until I actually graduated college and started working in the pharmaceutical industry that I realized I didn't like the chemistry field so much. 1. I would say a masters is probably a better bet, as it won't take as long and it'll allow you to progress more quickly once you're employed in the industry. It may take longer to do not having the knowledge base, but you can of course relate your project to chemistry as well.

  37. Hey,

thank you for the great videos.
I have one question for you. First up a little bit about what I will be doing next year.
I will go to a german university that has a ME and a automotive engineering program.
As of right now, I will be doing the automotive degree, because I have a life long passion for cars (including every detail you wrote down in your story,..lego,etc. :)

I am not really sure about this decicion because I also think it looks better to companies, when I have a ME degree. It looks more broader and more applicable to different problems.
    Here comes the kicker:
If I do the ME degree, all I will choose are the automotive courses, cause thats what I am interested in.
The Automotive degree and the ME degree don't differ in the first 4 semesters. After that you can "rebuilt" the automotive degree in your ME degree, just by choosing the right courses.

Won't the companies see that in my application and hold me for a guy that was too much focused on the automobil world during his studies by choosing the exact courses he could have been done with the automotive degree at his uni?

Should I do the ME degree anyway, because that's the first thing the people see on my application?

    Best regards,
    Alex

If you like applied science and creative design become a mechanic (mechanical, electrical, electronic, chemical & structural technologies).

If you like theoretical science, scientific design and advanced engineering research become a mechanical engineer. Mechanical Engineering is the father of all the other engineering branches out there.

One is not "better" than the other. While mechanical engineering is extremely broad and is basically the father of all engineering branches, do not overlook the fact that mechanics/technicians (also known as designers) have invented just about all profound inventions on Earth such as the: airplane, helicopter, modern firearm & ammunition, car, rocket, two and four stroke gasoline & diesel piston engine types, external combustion steam engine, hydraulic lever, pneumatic lever, elevator, gas turbine engine, mechanical computer, electronic computer and many more profound inventions, and also mechanics have pioneered mechanical engineering to what it is today.

Today’s Licensed Mechanic/Technician/Designer (aerospace or automotive) is yesterday’s Mechanical Engineer.

Mechanics/Technicians/Designers use applied mathematics, physics & chemistry and OEM specifications to design, manufacture, maintain and conceptualize complex machinery.

Mechanical Engineers use advanced mathematics, physics, chemistry, software analysis and also create new scientific & mathematical specifications, formulation and algorithms. Mechanical Engineers are concerned with the engineering complexities, research & development of basically anything in the known world! Mechanical Engineering is the father of all the other engineering branches!

To become a Mechanic/Technician/Designer expect to spend between two & four years at an accredited technical college and earn either AAS or BS in either Mechanical, Automotive, Electronics or Aerospace Technology. Plus State and/or Federal Mechanic Licensing plus another 6 to 8 years of work experience and/or research to become a Master Mechanic/Designer.

To become a Mechanical Engineer, expect to spend between four & six years at an accredited University and earn either a four-year BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or an MS degree in Mechanical Engineering. Then three years of EIT training followed by taking the P.E. License Testing. Then expect another four to eight years of work experience along with advanced engineering research to become a Lead Mechanical Engineer.

Mechanics tend to be inventive, creative, technical and logical.

Mechanical Engineers tend to be scientific, academic, industrialist & commercial.

Whichever side you choose or if you choose to do both, only do what you like & love!!!
